USC Research Study on Assessment and Placement into Community College ESL Courses: Information and Survey Instructions
You are invited to participate in a research study conducted by W. Edward Chi under the supervision of Dr. Tatiana Melguizo at the University of Southern California. Research studies include only people who voluntarily choose to take part. You should ask questions about anything that is unclear to you.
The purpose of the study is to document and assess colleges' assessment and placement practices for students in English as a Second Language (ESL) programs. The study seeks to provide evidence that improves practice at community colleges regionally and nationally.
Any identifiable information obtained in connection with this study will remain confidential. The survey responses will be destroyed once they have been transcribed. The anonymized data will remain secured in research staffs’ password protected computers.
Please note that you have the option not to take part in this study. There will be no penalties involved if you choose not to take part in this study. If you choose to participate, please complete this survey. Please complete as many questions as you are able. The 13 multiple-choice questions take about 5 minutes to answer. The remaining 7 free-response questions take about 5-10 minutes to answer.
